Quincy reports high turnout

By Grant Bosse

QUINCY, Mass. — Turnout was higher than expected at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Quincy, according to local election officials.

Precinct Warden Kelly Kennedy (no relation) says that the 364 voters who had cast ballots as of 3:30 was higher than she anticipated, and she was preparing for the dinner rush once voters came home from work.  Kennedy says there are between 1,500 and 1,600 registered voters in the precinct.

Outside the Hall, Quincy resident Brian Glennon stands alone in the rain, holding a Scott Brown sign.  Glennon says he only decided to get involved at 8 p.m. last night, and got his sign from a local organizer. He stood at the polls from the time they opened at 7 a.m.  He adds that it’s strange to see Massachusetts at the center of the political world, but hopes the Bay State can “send a message” to stop the health care bill currently under consideration by Congress.

Meanwhile, in Ward 1, five registered Democrats stand  on a street corner, two with Coakley signs, and three waving Brown signs.  The men are catching up and sharing stories of past campaigns, when they all worked for the same candidates.  Precinct Warden Nancy Jane Miller says she literally can’t remember how long she’s been overseeing elections in Quincy.  She said turnout had been “busy and steady all day, but with no lines.”  As of 4:30 this afternoon, 790 of the precinct’s 1793 registered voters had cast their ballots.
